Mark Henkel



Mark was born in Oklahoma and moved to Willcox, Arizona, with his family as a young child, There, the influence of Rex Allen and local ranchers gave Mark a lifelong love for the open land, western music, and real cowboys. Mark began singing in church at a young age and was in many school and civic musical productions growing up. He picked up guitar on his own as a teenager and continually challenges himself on these and other instruments. Mark performs in various local venues and was awarded First Place in the Male Vocalists Category at both the 2003 & 2005 Clifton-Vining Country Music Festivals in Clifton, Kansas. Mark was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 2003. He now works in construction on Ft. Riley and serves as the Worship Leader at Ogden Baptist Church in Ogden, Kansas. He earned his BS degree from Manhattan Christian College in Manhattan, Kansas. He lives outside of Junction City, Kansas, with his wife, Becky, and their 2 children, Amanda and Jacob.

Jacob Henkel

Jacob has lived life like a drover, following his dad from post to post. Born in Arkansas in 1989, Jacob is 18 years old and began singing in public with Mark in January of 2004. Jacob enjoys the cowboy way of life and he is rarely seen without his cowboy hat and boots. Jacob enjoys music, hunting, shooting, and hanging out with his friends. Jacob plays guitar, bass guitar and harmonica, and is taking lessons to sharpen his skills in piano/keyboard. Jacob has won various vocal awards both in the community and at school, including Second Place in the Junior Vocalist Category and Fifth Place in the Male Vocalist Category at the 2005 Clifton-Vining Music Festival in Clifton, Kansas. Jacob graduated from Flint Hills Christian School, Manhattan, Kansas, in May of 2008.
Jacob performs on his own with much success and offers a clear dimension to the harmony of the Sons of the Konza Prairie.

The Sons of the Konza Prairie are all about having fun. Mark and Jacob enjoy a good father-son relationship and those who know them know they are in for a good time when these two are around.
Above all, they praise God for giving them something they can do together that also brings joy to others. The Sons of the Konza Prairie won the First Place Trophy for Vocal Groups at both the Fourteenth & Fifteenth Annual Clifton-Vining Music Festivals in Clifton, Kansas. They were awarded the Harmony Duo Award in 2006 by the Western Music Association.
